Chris Nolan's Visit

We have the pleasure of having Chris Nolan, assistant librarian at Coates Library at Trinity University, come speak to us last Tuesday. His reasoning for coming was to show us a more accurate way of using search engines, such as Google. I learned so many things about the search engine that I didn't even know existed. For example, if you are searching something and you dont want a specific word to show up you place a - sign in front of the word than it won't show up in your results. In addition, Google gives priority to the sites they view as being more credible. Also when looking at a site to see if it is crediable, it is a good idea to look at the references and see if they are indeed crediable sources. A very useful thing i leatned was about Google desktop. This is an item that must download from the web. It is a resource that can be used to search your entire desktop in addition to your email. Another thing I learned was about the term "cache". If you click on this, itll pull up the article on the Google server with your keywords highlighted! This is very helpful, especially when you are doing research papers! Lastly, i agree with Mr. Nolan's reasoning for why Google is so popular among the other search engines. It's easy, fast, and reliable( for the most part).
